Petunia ‘Giant Cherry’ – Petunia X Hybrida Grandiflora
20 seeds, limited supply this year
A wonderful fast growing show stopper of a flowering plant – for everyone’s backyard. My seed is collected from Petunia shown in photos, however, I found it difficult to capture the true flower colour with my camera – basically it refused to capture the true brilliance of this vibrant colour.
It is a Hybrid called ‘Giant Cherry’, it has a wonderful large bushy trailing habit suitable for pots, hanging baskets, mass planting ground covers and landscapes.
The single flowers are a good average to large size, and can vary slightly in colour, but I expect the colour to be very similar to the photo, especially as there were no other colours around for cross pollination. To me these flowers look like a cross between Petunia Hybrids; Burgundy, Purple, Deep Rose and Violet. It’s always a little exciting to see that first flower, and note what shade it is. This shade of ‘cherry’ is fantastic, and a rare colour, it would ‘walk out the door’ in 2 seconds flat, of a nursery, if seen, its strange I have not sold any yet.
Grown as an annual, it has a long flowering life, and can flower all spring, summer and autumn if conditions are right. Suitable for a wide variety of climates, although native to South America, and is closely related to the tomato!
I do find this species is susceptible to damage from heavy rains, and this year I have some ‘diy’ cloches ready to use, just incase we get another 7 days of non-stop rain! (-could be a case of wishfully thinking here…) I know some varieties of Petunia can be grown without any additional water, especially if grown on the northeast side of the house here in Australia (morning sun only). So generally, they are very hardy, but I regularly water my hybrids to ensure maximum growth, plus I have an enriched potting mix.
Sow seeds when temperatures reach 21–27°C
Seeds are usually collected from tree/plant shown in photo. These Petunias were grown near Mackay, QLD. Happy to answer any questions you may have.
