Leptospermum brachyandrum – Weeping Tea Tree
100 seeds
My favourite Leptospermum, the Australian version of the weeping willow. My favourite because it’s hardier then the other ornamental Leptospermums, and ofcourse, it’s lovely weeping habit is gorgeous.
There is some confusing information about the 2 different weeping tea trees, {I will try to get some better photos, for some reason my camera plus my iphone, sometimes puts the same filter like affect on my photos which kind of diffuses the image, maybe I need some photo lessons!}.
Often Leptospermum madidum is sold as L brachyandrum. It is said that L brachyandrum has exposed trunks with flaky, bark displaying colours of grey and soft pink. (see photo of truck). Although in my opinion both, and all their subspecies, are the same species, it’s just over time, there’s been different sports evolve. But, it is said that Leptospermum brachyandrum is found in coastal and near-coastal areas from North Queensland to Port Macquarie in northern New South Wales. And, Leptospermum madidum is confined to the Cape York Peninsula where it grows on the banks of creeks and rivers. Subspecies sativum is found along watercourses and in sandstone gullies in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and the northernmost parts of the Northern Territory.
The seeds were collected from a species planted in a garden near Mackay, – and in a neighbourhood that likes to ‘clip’! (I included a photo of the neighbours showing their clipped bottlebrushes – very amusing!) So, anyway, this Tea Tree was purchased from a nursery and not growing there naturally. But it is well suited to the environment of sandy soil, humidity and seasonal waterlogging. They are found naturally all along the QLD coast, and top half of NSW coast, usually in watercourses, near rivers, or in moist soil. However, they have been found in dry rocky locations as well. So, in times of drought, when there is no seasonal water logging, they survive well. Suited to the typical Australian weather. They are also frost hardy.
They grow to about 5m and have pretty little white flowers in early spring and again in summer. After the previous year has shed its outer later you could describe the trunk as smooth and interesting.

I really need some more photos of the trees grown from this batch of seed – so I can add them onto the page listings. Please, feel free to take as many photos of as you want, and contact me via email; [email protected]
For most seeds (unless otherwise stated): Sow Spring – Lightly cover and keep moist until germination – best to do in the hot before a rain event. Grow seedling over the spring/summer in shade house with ideal conditions, then plant out autumn with occasional watering for the first 2 years.
Seeds are usually collected from tree/plant shown in photo. Happy to answer any questions you may have.
My business mission: is to provide backyard owners with seed of Australian Native plants, in particular ornamental species, with aesthetic attributes, to create good vibes and a sense of peace.
And my seller promise; if you purchase from me, I will send it to you.
I use recycled packaging. And I make a note of sending more seeds than stated in page listing. Plus, I’m a definite advocate for ‘organics’ as much as possible, there are no pesticides at my place!
