I love this hakea.
This hakea is not described in neither of my plant Botanic reference books. Nor is there much info on the internet. But I read it is similar to Hakea multilineata, but I grow both these hakeas, and they are quite different, H. grammatophylla is much slower growing, has silver / glaucous foliage, short flowers and only reaches 1 – 2m. Whereas the multilineata, has green leaves, flowers that are twice as long and more likely to grow closer to the trunk, and it can reach 4 or 5m. Also unlike H. multilineata, these seeds are abundant and are easy to germinate. The only resemblance I can see is leaf shape.
My plant has been flowering all winter and is quite spectacular.
It is very drought hardy, preferring dry poor rocky soil on a slope (the H. multilineata will die if it is water logged, could be the same for H. grammatophylla)
i’ve had these seeds up for sale for some years now and surprisingly I haven’t really sold many, until this month, November 2023 I’ve suddenly selling quite a few, about half my supply in fact, possibly the Webmaster here has advertised them. So, I checked the Internet to see if there’s any more information about this one, and not really, except wiki has some good information in regards to locality in the Northern Territory.
For most seeds (unless otherwise stated): Sow Spring – Lightly cover and keep moist until germination – best to do in the hot before a rain event. Grow seedling over the spring/summer in shade house with ideal conditions, then plant out autumn with occasional watering for the first 2 years.
Seeds are usually collected from tree/plant shown in photo, this one was growing at Gunnedah, NSW. Happy to answer any questions you may have.
My business mission: is to provide backyard owners with seed of Australian Native plants, in particular ornamental species, with aesthetic attributes, to create good vibes and a sense of peace.
And my seller promise; if you purchase from me, I will send it to you.
I use recycled packaging. And I make a note of sending more seeds than stated in page listing. Plus, I’m a definite advocate for ‘organics’ as much as possible, there are no pesticides at my place!
