Crepis rubra – Hawksbeard
Seed x 20
Related to the Dandelion, it pretty much looks like, a pink flowering dandelion. So, a tough hardy annual 30-40cm tall. Native to the Mediterranean, tolerates poor, dry soil, but also handles well-prepared, moist garden soil.
Sow in situ, they don’t like to be disturbed when young, in early spring, barely covering with soil. Keep the soil moist until seedlings appear, which can take a few weeks. Although whenever I see, sow in situ, I usually don’t! I prefer to sow in pots, as I find ants take my seeds away if I sow down in the garden bed.
After they germinate in the pot, I leave till they are robust, say a couple of weeks, then transplant seedlings carefully with minimal root disturbance. I usually try to transplant when rain is expected.
For most seeds (unless otherwise stated): Sow Spring – Lightly cover and keep moist until germination – best to do in the hot before a rain event. Grow seedling over the spring/summer in shade house with ideal conditions, then plant out autumn with occasional watering for the first 2 years.
