The name refers to the awl-like leaves (phyllodes). Native to NSW, found in dry sclerophyll forest and woodland, in clays, loams and sandy soils, often in skeletal soils in hilly areas, or along streams.
Grows well in my garden at Rangari, near Gunnedah, NSW, Australia – poor rocky soil with 200-600mm annual rainfall.
1–4 m high, mine reached 3m after 7yrs. I grew them as a boundry hedge; they were a bit straggly looking up close, but would ‘bush up’ with pruning. Flowers in response to rain. And the ‘leaves’ do not fall to the ground like pine needles do. Drought hardy. Looks ‘suited’ in a bush garden.
Acacia subulata is a species in the genus Acacia which contains between 1550 and 1852 species!
I did a YouTube video so you can see the seed, scarification details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P3iHboENVY
For most seeds (unless otherwise stated): Sow Spring – Lightly cover and keep moist until germination – best to do in the hot before a rain event. Grow seedling over the spring/summer in shade house with ideal conditions, then plant out autumn with occasional watering for the first 2 years.
Seeds are usually collected from tree/plant shown in photo, this one was growing in my garden near Gunnedah, NSW. Happy to answer any questions you may have.
My business mission: is to provide backyard owners with seed of Australian Native plants, in particular ornamental species, with aesthetic attributes, to create good vibes and a sense of peace.
And my seller promise; if you purchase from me, I will send it to you.
I use recycled packaging. And I make a note of sending more seeds than stated in page listing. Plus, I’m a definite advocate for ‘organics’ as much as possible, there are no pesticides at my place!
