Acacia spectabilis – Mudgee wattle, seeds x 10 only 1 left
A pretty little ferny wattle that can get to 6m in height with good conditions. (I have never seen one that tall). Also has a lovely powdery white trunk and slightly ‘droopy branch’ habit. I feel it has a slightly oriental look about it too. An underrated Acacia.
It is a tough Acacia, but could not handle the last drought here on the dry rocky slope where it was, so I am going to try one on the more clay flat and see how it goes (400-600ml annual rain). It will handle coast/Sydney or frosty conditions fine.
The species occurs naturally in dry sclerophyll forest and heath in New South Wales and Queensland and is commonly cultivated.
A good tree choice for a garden. Attracts native birds to the garden, as parrots eat the seeds. Rhizobium nodules on the roots (a feature of all leguminous plants) help in fixing atmospheric nitrogen into the soil.
These seeds need to be pretreated before sowing in Spring or Summer: Scarify Seeds: Seeds have to be soaked in boiling water, then left to sit overnight or until they have swollen with water – they will double in size, then sow in ordinary way and they will germinate easily. Best sown in spring then planted out next Autumn.I did a YouTube video so you can see the seed, scarification details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P3iHboENVY
For most seeds (unless otherwise stated): Sow Spring – Lightly cover and keep moist until germination – best to do in the hot before a rain event. Grow seedling over the spring/summer in shade house with ideal conditions, then plant out autumn with occasional watering for the first 2 years.
Seeds are usually collected from tree/plant shown in photo, this one was growing in my garden near Gunnedah, NSW. Happy to answer any questions you may have.
My business mission: is to provide backyard owners with seed of Australian Native plants, in particular ornamental species, with aesthetic attributes, to create good vibes and a sense of peace.
And my seller promise; if you purchase from me, I will send it to you.
I use recycled packaging. And I make a note of sending more seeds than stated in page listing. Plus, I’m a definite advocate for ‘organics’ as much as possible, there are no pesticides at my place!
